
DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's of Arts. The director advised her to pursue UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in addition to the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt claimed that she never ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most famous. She was selected for the pilot of the show and was offered the role. Janet was also featured in the episode of The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode in 1984 of Three's Company. Acting was her first return to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer in the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress also was a part of Spring Fling, the 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain featured an actress who was modelled on her voice by a different actress in 1997. She was featured in an episode Cybill. Her 2000s work includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
