The mother also has three siblings and a brother. Her father was a diplomat, and family members frequently moved. They resided in numerous nations around the world including Germany, Japan, Greece and Germany. Harden attended Surrattsville High School in Clinton after settling down in Maryland. In the autumn of 1980, she attended University of Texas at Austin. She earned a bachelor's degree in theatre in that same year. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988 to pursue her MFA.
